Day 46
Liverpool (Syracuse) NY to Little Falls NY
Miles Ridden 79.7
Climbing 1815 Ft'
Total Miles Ridden 3323.8
Miles To Go 268.0
Leaving the hotel, it was damp and humid with a strong chance of rain during the ride. That meant carrying a rain jacket, just in case. Rain jackets while cycling don't keep you dry because they cause you to sweat so much but they are useful for staying warm. We had to use a number of busy city streets to get out of town. Someone counted 28 traffic lights before we got to rural roads.
When we got on country roads we followed the NY Thruway and the old Erie Canal east and ended up crossing the Thruway six or seven times. The first town we came to was Canastota. My sister, Nancy, lived there forty years ago. It is also the home of the Boxing Hall Of Fame for reasons that aren't clear.
The next town we came to was Oneida. As the route took us blocks from their house, we visited Carol and Charley's house for coffee and blueberry muffins and a brief tour of their garden. We took quiet, back roads to Utica which was busy and slowed us for miles with more lights.
We ended up on Route 5 which is another New York State cycling road. The forecasted rain held off but things looked threatening. I decided to break from the informal group we had been riding with and go as fast as I could for the last twenty miles. I averaged about 23 MPH for the first ten miles and was feeling pretty strong. Then I saw the lights of a group behind me, gaining. I pushed it a few more miles but a large group can usually catch a single rider and they did about seven miles from Little Falls.
Little Falls is another of the old manufacturing towns dotting Central New York that have lost most of their jobs as the plants closed. It is about one quarter the size it was 60 years ago but has a number of interesting buildings from the prosperous days. It is located on the Mohawk River Erie Barge Canal and has a large lock which is claimed to be one of the deepest in the world.
We had dodged rain while riding for most of the past week but the rain started in the evening and was expected to continue all the next day with flood warnings issued.
